A Minecraft Movie Review: A Christian Perspective on Creativity and Faith

A live-action adaptation of Minecraft in which four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—are transported through a portal into the blocky Overworld. Teaming up with expert crafter Steve (Jack Black), they face Piglins and Zombies, learn to harness creativity, and work together to find a way home—blending action, humor, and heart for families.

Creativity reflects the imago Dei—humans as “sub-creators” shaping the world for good. The team’s journey from confusion to purposeful building echoes the call to use God-given gifts in community (cf. Ecclesiastes 4:9–10). Light, family-friendly themes invite discussion on purpose, cooperation, and serving others with our talents.

Jared Hess brings quirky humor and brisk pacing that keeps younger viewers engaged. The film captures the game’s playful essence and Overworld charm, though the adventure beats can feel familiar and occasionally predictable.

Jason Momoa’s affable, comedic Garrett pairs well with Jack Black’s warm, eccentric Steve. Their chemistry supplies heart and laughs. The supporting trio (Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen) are appealing, if less developed.
