Bonhoeffer (2024) Christian Movie Review: Faith, Sacrifice & Resistance

A gripping biographical drama of Dietrich Bonhoeffer—a theologian and pastor who resists Hitler as the church is co-opted by Nazism. Torn between nonviolence and joining a plot against a tyrant, Bonhoeffer’s journey moves from pulpit to underground resistance, wrestling with conscience, sacrifice, and faithful discipleship.

At its core, the film is profoundly Christian: it portrays faith that acts (Romans 12:21), Bonhoeffer’s “costly grace” lived out in daily self-denial (Luke 9:23), and truth defended in a compromised church (cf. 2 Timothy 4:3). It invites believers to weigh discipleship when the cost is high and to reject nationalism masquerading as gospel.

Thoughtful, emotionally charged, and contemplative. The film favors moral/theological gravity over action beats, blending spy-drama tension with an interior spiritual journey. Occasional density/non-linear touches may challenge viewers unfamiliar with Bonhoeffer’s biography.

Jonas Dassler offers quiet strength and conviction as Bonhoeffer. August Diehl (Niemöller) and Moritz Bleibtreu (Karl) deepen the personal stakes. David Jonsson and Clarke Peters (Harlem church thread) add warmth and perspective. Flula Borg’s Hans von Dohnányi is surprisingly poignant.
