What It Really Means to Be a Disciple of Christ

What It Really Means to Be a Disciple of Christ

Introduction: More Than Just a Believer

Many people today identify as Christians, but what does it truly mean to be a disciple of Christ? Is being a disciple simply about believing in Jesus, or is there more to it?

In Luke 9:23, Jesus clearly lays out what it means to be His disciple:

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

This verse teaches that discipleship is not about passive belief but about an active, daily commitment to follow Jesus, no matter the cost.

In this blog post, we will explore what it truly means to be a disciple of Christ, the characteristics of a true disciple, the cost of discipleship, and practical ways to live as a disciple today.

What Is a Disciple?

The word disciple comes from the Greek word mathētēs, which means learner or follower. In biblical times, a disciple was someone who devoted themselves to learning from and following a teacher.

In Christianity, a disciple is someone who follows Jesus, learns from His teachings, and strives to live according to His example. The early disciples, such as Peter, James, and John, physically followed Jesus, listening to His teachings, witnessing His miracles, and obeying His commands.

Today, we may not physically walk alongside Jesus, but we are still called to follow Him spiritually by:

  • Learning from His Word (the Bible).
  • Obeying His teachings.
  • Living a life that reflects His love and truth.

Jesus didn’t call us to simply believe in Him from a distance—He called us to follow Him wholeheartedly.

The Characteristics of a True Disciple

Jesus gave clear instructions about what it means to be His disciple. Here are five key characteristics that define a true disciple of Christ:

1. A Deep Love for Jesus

The foundation of discipleship is love for Christ. Jesus said:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”Matthew 22:37

A disciple prioritizes their relationship with Jesus above all else. This means putting Him first in decisions, desires, and daily life. When we truly love Jesus, we naturally want to follow Him, obey His commands, and spend time in His presence.

2. Obedience to God’s Word

True disciples don’t just hear God’s Word—they live it out. Jesus said:

“If you love me, keep my commands.”John 14:15

Obedience to God’s Word is a sign of true discipleship. This doesn’t mean we will be perfect, but it does mean we strive to live according to God’s instructions, even when it’s difficult.

3. A Life of Prayer

Jesus Himself spent time in prayer, setting an example for His disciples. Prayer is how we communicate with God and align our hearts with His will. A true disciple prioritizes prayer, not just in moments of need, but as a way of life.

“Pray continually.”1 Thessalonians 5:17

Through prayer, we grow closer to God, receive His guidance, and gain strength to live as His disciples.

4. Faith and Trust in God

Discipleship requires faith, especially when life is uncertain. The Bible tells us:

“For we live by faith, not by sight.”2 Corinthians 5:7

Following Jesus means trusting Him even when we don’t understand His plan. A disciple relies on God’s promises, knowing that He is always faithful.

5. A Heart for Serving Others

Jesus modeled servant-hearted leadership when He washed His disciples’ feet, saying:

“I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”John 13:14-15

A true disciple serves others selflessly, putting the needs of others before their own. Whether through acts of kindness, generosity, or sharing the Gospel, disciples live to serve as Jesus did.

The Cost of Discipleship

While discipleship is rewarding, Jesus never promised it would be easy. In fact, He warned that following Him comes with a cost:

“Whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”Luke 14:27

Jesus calls His disciples to surrender their personal desires, comforts, and even relationships if necessary to follow Him. The cost of discipleship may include:

  • Sacrificing comfort – Choosing obedience over convenience.
  • Facing rejection – Standing firm in faith even when others disagree.
  • Letting go of worldly desires – Prioritizing God’s kingdom over material success.

But despite the cost, the rewards of discipleship—eternal life, a deep relationship with God, and true peace—far outweigh any sacrifice.

How to Live as a Disciple Today

Discipleship isn’t just for biblical times—it’s for every believer today. Here’s how we can live as true disciples of Christ:

1. Spend Time in God’s Word Daily

The Bible is our guidebook for discipleship. Reading and studying Scripture helps us grow in wisdom and understand God’s will.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”Psalm 119:105

2. Pray Consistently

Make prayer a daily habit, seeking God’s guidance, strength, and wisdom.

3. Fellowship with Other Believers

We were never meant to follow Jesus alone. Being part of a Christian community provides encouragement and accountability.

“Let us not give up meeting together...but encouraging one another.”Hebrews 10:25

4. Share the Gospel Boldly

Disciples are called to make more disciples. Jesus commanded:

“Go and make disciples of all nations.”Matthew 28:19

Sharing our faith, whether through words or actions, is a key part of discipleship.

5. Live Out Your Faith Daily

A disciple doesn’t just follow Jesus on Sundays but every day. Live in a way that reflects Christ’s love, grace, and truth.

“Let your light shine before others.”Matthew 5:16

Encouragement for the Journey

Becoming a disciple is a journey, not a destination. Some days will be challenging, but remember:

  • God gives strength to those who follow Him (Philippians 4:13).
  • His grace covers our shortcomings (2 Corinthians 12:9).
  • He is always with us, even in difficulties (Matthew 28:20).

Conclusion: A Call to True Discipleship

Being a disciple of Christ means more than just believing in Him—it means following Him with your whole heart. It requires love, obedience, prayer, faith, and service. While discipleship comes with challenges, the rewards are eternal.

Are you ready to take the next step in your discipleship journey?

Let’s commit today to follow Jesus more closely, grow in His Word, and live out our faith boldly.
