Church Lost-and-Found Discovers 14 Personalized Bibles, No One Admits They’re Missing
TULSA, OK — October 23, 2026
A routine church lost-and-found cleanout took an unexpected turn Wednesday when volunteers discovered 14 personalized Bibles and not one person willing to admit a Bible was missing.
The collection, found beneath three winter coats and a crockpot lid, included embossed names, handwritten dedications, and enough identifying information to resolve every case before lunch.
“We usually wait for people to come looking,” said lost-and-found coordinator Marlene Beck. “But one of these has been here since last November. At this point, the Bible has completed a full liturgical year without its owner.”
Church staff sent a congregation-wide message asking members to check the table before Sunday. Within minutes, the office received 27 replies saying, “Mine is black too,” along with six assurances that the missing Bible probably belonged to someone from the early service.
Volunteers then moved the table between the coffee station and the main exit, forcing every adult in the church to pass directly beside it.
Witnesses said traffic immediately rerouted through the children’s hallway.
“I use the Bible app now,” explained member Brent Lawson while quietly turning a leather-bound volume so his nameplate faced the wall. “That physical one is more of a backup. A spiritual emergency kit.”
One Bible contained four old bulletins, a 2019 vacation Bible school coupon, and a reading plan carefully checked through Leviticus 3. Its owner said the evidence was “circumstantial.”
The young adult ministry offered to build a digital claims form. The form asked users to identify the cover color, preferred translation, and last book they remembered reading.
Twelve submissions were abandoned at the third question.
Pastor Grant Hale briefly considered preaching on the lost sheep, but several members objected that the comparison was unfair because “the Bibles knew exactly where they were.”
By Thursday afternoon, one volume had been claimed by a nine-year-old girl who recognized her mother’s name inside the cover.
“We’re proud of her honesty,” the mother said, before asking volunteers to hold it until after lunch so she would not have to carry it.
At press time, the lost-and-found contained 13 unclaimed Bibles, eight new phone chargers, and another crockpot lid nobody remembered bringing.
